About Sat-tila Ekadashi
Sat-tila Ekadashi (also spelled Sattila or Shattila) is observed during the Krishna Paksha (waning moon) of the Magha month. The name "Sat-tila" literally means "seven sesame seeds" in Sanskrit, referring to the seven sacred ways sesame seeds (tila) are used during this observance.
This Ekadashi holds special significance in Hindu tradition because sesame seeds are believed to have originated from Lord Vishnu's body, making them inherently sacred. Using sesame in worship during this Ekadashi multiplies the spiritual merit manifold.
🌱 The Seven Ways of Sesame (Sat-tila)
To receive maximum blessings, use sesame seeds in these seven ways:
- 1. Bathing: Add sesame seeds to your bath water
- 2. Body Ubtan: Apply sesame paste on your body before bathing
- 3. Havan/Homa: Offer sesame seeds in sacred fire
- 4. Worship: Offer sesame to Lord Vishnu's idol
- 5. Tarpan: Mix sesame in water for ancestral offerings
- 6. Eating: Consume foods made with sesame
- 7. Donation: Give sesame seeds to Brahmins and the needy
📖 The Sacred Story of Sat-tila Ekadashi
Lord Krishna narrated this story to Yudhishthira: Once, a wealthy Brahmin woman observed all Ekadashi fasts but never performed charity. After death, despite her devotion, she found herself in a realm lacking food and water due to her failure to give.
She called out to Lord Vishnu, who explained that devotion without charity is incomplete. He advised her to observe Sat-tila Ekadashi and donate sesame seeds. Upon doing so, she was liberated and attained the heavenly realms. This story emphasizes that charity (dana) must accompany fasting (upavasa) for complete spiritual benefit.
