∞ Significance of Apara Ekadashi

Apara means "limitless," "infinite," or "incomparable" in Sanskrit. This Ekadashi grants unlimited spiritual merit — it's said that observing it is equivalent to:

  • Bathing in all sacred rivers (Ganga, Yamuna, Godavari, etc.)
  • Visiting all pilgrimage sites (Kashi, Prayag, Mathura, etc.)
  • Performing hundreds of Ashwamedha Yagnas
  • Donating thousands of cows to Brahmins

🌟 Unique Benefit: Apara Ekadashi is especially powerful for liberating ancestors (Pitru) from lower realms and granting them peace in the afterlife.

📖 The Story of Apara Ekadashi

The Brahmanda Purana narrates that there was once a powerful king named Mahidhwaja, known for his righteousness. He had a younger brother named Vajradhwaja, who was jealous and evil.

Consumed by greed, Vajradhwaja killed his brother Mahidhwaja in the forest and buried his body under a tree. The soul of Mahidhwaja became a ghost (Preta) and haunted that forest.

Years later, a sage named Dhaumya passed through the forest and encountered the ghost. Through his divine vision, he understood the situation and advised the ghost's living descendants to observe Apara Ekadashi and transfer the merit.

✨ When the family observed Apara Ekadashi with devotion and offered its merit to Mahidhwaja, he was instantly freed from his ghost form and ascended to Vaikuntha, the abode of Lord Vishnu.
