Everything you need to know about Ekadashi fasting
Ekadashi is the eleventh day (tithi) of each lunar fortnight in the Hindu calendar. It occurs twice a month โ once during the waxing moon (Shukla Paksha) and once during the waning moon (Krishna Paksha).
The word comes from Sanskrit: 'eka' meaning one and 'dashi' meaning ten, together meaning eleven.
๐ Ekadashi is considered one of the most sacred days for Hindus, especially devotees of Lord Vishnu. Fasting on this day is believed to purify the mind and body, burn past karma, and bring one closer to moksha (spiritual liberation).
The tradition has been practiced for thousands of years and is mentioned in various Hindu scriptures including the Padma Purana, Skanda Purana, and Bhagavata Purana.
To observe Ekadashi fast properly, follow these steps:
๐ก The key is maintaining a devotional attitude throughout the observance. The spiritual intention matters as much as the physical fasting.
During Ekadashi fasting, certain foods are permitted while others must be strictly avoided:
All fresh fruits โ bananas, apples, grapes, pomegranates, oranges, coconut
Milk, yogurt, paneer, butter, ghee
Almonds, cashews, walnuts, peanuts, raisins
Potatoes, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, bottle gourd, raw banana, tomatoes, carrots
Buckwheat (kuttu), water chestnut flour (singhara), amaranth (rajgira), tapioca (sabudana)
Rock salt (sendha namak), black pepper, cumin, green cardamom
All grains (rice, wheat, barley), beans, lentils, regular salt, onion, garlic, mushrooms
Ekadashi fasting begins at sunrise on the Ekadashi tithi (lunar day) and ends after sunrise on Dwadashi (the next day) during a specific time window called 'Parana time'.
The exact timing varies based on:
โฐ Example: If Ekadashi sunrise is 6:30 AM, you begin fasting then. The next day (Dwadashi), Parana time might be 6:35 AM to 9:15 AM. You must break your fast within this window for full spiritual benefit.
Our calendar provides specific Parana timings for each Ekadashi.
Yes, you can drink water during most Ekadashi fasts. There are different levels of observance:
๐ง For beginners or those with health constraints, drinking water and having fruits/milk is perfectly acceptable. The spiritual intention and devotion matter more than the strictness of fasting. Always prioritize your health!
Nirjala Ekadashi, also called Bhima Ekadashi or Pandava Ekadashi, is the most powerful and austere Ekadashi. It falls in the month of Jyeshtha (May-June) during Shukla Paksha.
๐ In 2026, Nirjala Ekadashi falls on June 25th.
'Nirjala' means 'without water' โ devotees observe a complete waterless fast for 24+ hours.
According to the Brahma Vaivarta Purana, observing this single Ekadashi grants the spiritual merit of observing all 24 Ekadashis in a year.
The story goes that Bhima, the mighty Pandava, couldn't fast regularly due to his enormous appetite, so sage Vyasa advised him to observe just this one Ekadashi strictly.
โ ๏ธ Due to its intensity, Nirjala Ekadashi is not recommended for pregnant women, elderly, children, or those with health conditions.
There are typically 24 Ekadashis in a year โ two in each lunar month (one during waxing moon and one during waning moon).
In some years with an extra lunar month (Adhik Maas or Purushottam Maas), there can be 26 Ekadashis.
Each Ekadashi has a unique name and spiritual significance. The 24 Ekadashis of 2026 are:
Saphala, Pausha Putrada, Sat-tila, Jaya, Vijaya, Amalaki, Papmochani, Kamada, Varuthini, Mohini, Apara, Nirjala, Yogini, Devshayani, Kamika, Shravana Putrada, Aja, Parsva, Indira, Papankusha, Rama, Devutthana, Utpanna, and Mokshada.
โญ Some Ekadashis like Nirjala, Devshayani, Devutthana, and Mokshada are considered especially powerful and are observed by even casual practitioners.
Ekadashi holds profound spiritual, physical, and astronomical significance:
๐ The Padma Purana states that Lord Vishnu resides in Ekadashi tithi itself. The Bhagavata Purana describes it as the 'mother of devotion.'
The next Ekadashi depends on your current date. In 2026, Ekadashis occur approximately every 15 days.

Pregnant women are generally exempt from strict Ekadashi fasting according to Hindu scriptures. However, they can observe Ekadashi in modified ways:
๐คฐ Recommended: Pregnant women can observe a partial fast by having fruits, milk, nuts, and light sattvic foods. Complete fasting is NOT advised as it may affect the baby's development.
What scriptures say: The Dharma Shastras specifically exempt pregnant women, nursing mothers, the elderly, children under 8, the seriously ill, and those taking essential medications from strict fasting.
Alternative observances:
The principle: Devotion matters more than physical austerity. Lord Vishnu appreciates sincere intention over rigid rules that might harm your health or your baby.
